Tune in while Tim introduces you to the life and music of Isabella Leonarda, placing her in the context of other women composers from the Early Modern Era, and offering a guided tour of her 1676 motet, O flammæ. In this piece, we will see how musical depictions of human passions in the 17th century blurred the lines separating secular and sacred experiences and worldviews, and how composers like Leonarda worked with a set of rhetorical tools that can be unlocked to allow this music to speak to audiences nearly 400 years later.
